Baby Growth Chart Calculator
The baby growth chart calculator measures the growth of your baby using age, gender, weight, length, and head circumference. It gives you the percentile, which compares your baby's weight, height (aka length), and head circumference with other babies of the same gender and age. e.g., if your baby's weight is in the 60th percentile, it means the baby weighs 60% more and 40% less than other babies of the same age and gender. It is based on the WHO (World Health Organization) growth chart provided on the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) website.
Growth chart percentile
A Growth Chart helps to track your baby's growth (aged 0 to 2 years), including weight, length, and head circumference, by comparing with other babies of the same gender and age. 10th percentile means your baby's growth is lowest among the other babies, 50th percentile means middle growth, and 90th percentile means highest growth among babies of the same age and gender. Nutrition, genetics, and other health factors influence the growth of the baby. Sometimes it is normal if your baby weighs in the 15th or 85th percentile for weight, height, or head circumference. One should check whether your baby is growing at a constant rate.
How to weigh your baby?
- Make sure your scale is on a flat and hard surface, and the scale is turned on.
- The weight of the baby should be measured in minimal clothing.
- Before measuring, make sure the scale is reading to 0.
- The parent or carer should stand in the middle of the scale with bare feet carrying a baby and measure the weight to the nearest 0.1kg.
- Weigh the parent or carer without the baby and subtract the weight of the parent or carer.
How to measure a baby's height (length)?
- Remove the baby's show and shock, and other clothes like a nappy, which increase your baby's height.
- Lay your baby on the back on a flat surface. Place the board touching the feet and head, gently pressing the hair.
- Make sure your baby's head is looking up, the body is straight, and the spine is not arched.
- Measure the length between the boards to the nearest 0.1 cm.
- If the height of a child is measured in a lying position (especially for children under 2 years of age) generally said to be length rather than height.
How to measure a baby's head circumference?
- Remove any hair accessory, e.g., clips, hairbands, or hair style.
- Measure the head circumference by placing the tape on the forehead above the eyebrow, above the ear, and around the prominent part of the back, pressing the hair gently.
- Measure the reading to the nearest 0.1 cm.
Do growth charts differ between breast-fed and formula-fed babies?
Breast-fed babies show different growth patterns in comparison to formula-fed babies. Bread-fed baby is leaner than a formula-fed baby after the introduction of food by the age of 12 months. But the head circumference doesn't differ between breast-fed and formula-fed.
Do growth charts differ based on ethnicity?
Baby will have similar growth with proper nutrition and healthcare across different ethnicities, socio-economic statuses before the age of five.
Limitations of the baby growth chart
Our baby's growth chart is not for diagnosing your baby's health, and it is for up to 2 years of age based on WHO (World Health Organization) reference data.
